Burrishoole Cemetery is located along the north shore of Clew Bay west of Newport at the Burrishoole Abbey. I visited the cemetery in July of 2004 and videotaped headstones as I walked among the ruins, then transcribed these after returning. I have video captures (sorry, not the greatest quality) of all the graves with numbers. Click on the number to see a snapshot of the headstone. Those marked with a N came from transcriptions recorded by Joe Needham and housed at The Newport Historical Society website and are incorporated into my transcriptions to provide additional information, typically about who provided the headstone. Those marked with a MOTD were taken from a CD called "Memorials of the Dead" and are also included with my transcriptions. There are additional Burrishoole transcriptions at "Deese Genes Have Irish Eyes".
Burrishoole Abbey was built by the Dominican Friars in the fifteenth century. The ruins are still impressive. Graves are located both inside and outside of the ruins with a newer cemetery located to the north of the abbey as you drive in. All of the graves I transcribed were in the older section around the abbey.
