Murrisk Cemetery, Murrisk, Co. Mayo

Murrisk Cemetery is located on the south shore of Clew Bay at the base of Croagh Patrick. I visited the cemetery late one evening in July of 2004 and videotaped headstones as I walked among the ruins, then transcribed these after returning. We were planning to climb The Reek the next day and I took a drive to see how far it was from Westport. The cemetery is located around the ruins of Murrisk Abbey, which was founded in 1456 by the Augustinian Friars. Even though it was after 11:00 PM, it was still light enough to videotape the gravestones. It was a very quiet night and I was alone in the cemetery and ruins. My appearance in the cemetery was not appreciated by a flock of crows that perched atop the ruins and would intermittently screech at me. I think they liked to see how high I would jump each time they startled me.

I have video captures (sorry, not the greatest quality) of all the graves with numbers. Click on the number to see a snapshot of the headstone. Those marked with a MOTD were taken from a CD called "Memorials of the Dead" and are also included with my transcriptions. Most of these transcriptions dated to burials prior to 1900 and I only found a couple of these gravestones. There are additional Murrisk transcriptions at "Deese Genes Have Irish Eyes".
